GREENACRES BAND WINS SWEEPSTAKES TROPHY

The Greenacres Mustang Band needs a larger trophy case to house its growing number of awards.

The band recently performed at the Louisiana Music Educators Association (LMEA) District VIII Band Assessment, hosted by Airline High School. The Mustang Band received a Superior rating for their stage performance and a Superior rating for their sight reading performance, earning them a Sweepstakes trophy.

This is the 19th Sweepstakes trophy over the past 20 years for the Mustang Band, which is under the direction of Cheryl Corkran. Pictured with the trophy are Greenacres Band President Jamie Rivers and Vice President Tyler Almer.

District Band Assessment is held each March and bands earning Sweepstakes trophies qualify for the LMEA State Music Assessment, held in May. There will be 31 bands from District VIII performing over a three-day period. Bossier Parish bands will be competing with those from Caddo, Desoto and Webster parishes.

Congratulations to the mighty Mustang Band!

BENTON MIDDLE COLLECTS "TABS FOR TOTS"

Students at Benton Middle School have been collecting a lot of pop tops. Just look at all of the bags of soda can tabs surrounding Landry Ray and Kayla Cassidy.

The two girls came up with the idea to raise money for Carson Braun and donate it to the Ronald McDonald House, next to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee. The duo wrote a proposal for "Tabs for Tots" and took it to the administration at Benton Middle School. It received their full support.

Landry and Kayla then put their plan into action, gathering plastic containers for the tabs and coming up with a friendly homeroom competition to see which one could collect the most "Tabs for Tots." Competition was fierce; after all, the top three would win donut parties.

In the end, Mrs. Benoit's homeroom dominated, collecting 73 pounds' worth of tabs. Mr. Colvin and Mr. Matthews' classes tied for second place, with four pounds of tabs each; and Mrs. Carr's homeroom came in third, collecting two pounds of tabs.

That is a lot of Coke tabs. Most importantly, they will amount to a generous donation to Ronald McDonald House in honor of Carson Braun. Way to go, Landry and Kayla for coming up with such a great idea and to Benton Middle School for helping out in a big way!

FIVE GREENACRES STUDENTS RECEIVE AWARD FROM DUKE

Five students at Greenacres Middle School are being eyed by Duke University.

Each spring the Duke University Talent Identification Program (TIP) recognizes academically-talented seventh graders for exceptional scores on the ACT or SAT. These are youth at the top of their game, who have scored at or above the 95th percentile on a grade-level achievement test. As part of the program, these students take above-level college entrance exams to learn more about their abilities.

Duke TIP then hosts an annual state recognition ceremony to honor the seventh graders that score the highest on their ACT or SAT exams. Honored this year from Greenacres are Justin Cutera, Chloe Farrah, Alyssa Arbuckle, Emily Selmer and Cat Kennon. Pictured are Justin, Chloe and Alyssa at the ceremony held in Ruston.

"This year's recognition ceremonies invitees have achieved exceptionally high scores on the ACT or SAT, rivaling those of half of college-bound seniors who took the same tests," said Martha Putallaz, Ph.D., Duke TIP executive director and professor of psychology and neuroscience at Duke. "We are extremely proud of our participants."

The Bossier School System is also extremely proud of these five students.
