Assessment

What gets measured gets mastered.

Louisiana Believes starts with the premise that all students can achieve high expectations and master rigorous academic standards. If you believe that all students can achieve, then you must measure their progress annually to ensure they remain on track for college and professional careers.

Louisiana is aligning assessments to more rigorous Common Core State Standards in English language arts and math. In Spring 2013, students will take tougher writing and math tests. The previous writing assessment asked students to write a personal opinion about a subject. The new assessment will require students to read one or two passages and use facts in the text to support their essay. In math, students will be asked to demonstrate skills in earlier grades. Assessments will be fully aligned to Common Core State Standards in 2014-2015.

Louisiana is also revising assessments in social studies and science to be launched in 2014-2015.

Cell Phone Policy - Testing Environments

All cell phones or other similar technological devices with imaging or text-messaging capabilities that are the property of students, test administrators, and school test coordinators must be placed in and remain in the off position and stored in a secure area as designated and supervised by a school administrator during test administration or any other time that test booklets and answer documents are present.

Accountability

Students and teachers are rising to the challenge.

Louisiana Believes starts with the premise that all students can achieve high expectations and master rigorous academic standards. If you believe all children can learn, then you must hold schools accountable for the performance of students.

Louisiana grades schools on a scale of A through F, just like students. Letter grades are easy for parents and the public to understand. The grades are calculated based on objective measures of student achievement, including test scores and graduation rates. Today, the number of A and B schools – 471 – is higher than the number of D and F schools – 461. In 2012, nearly one-third of all schools achieved expected growth.

Given the adoption of the more rigorous common core standards, test will also become tougher to align with these higher expectations. With the higher bar for success, schools will have to work harder to maintain good grades.
