“Play helps children make sense of their world and gives them an opportunity to learn how to get along, think, communicate, make decisions, delay gratification, solve problems, and build confidence ... skills that not only the support the development of happy, productive children but also produce happy, productive adults!”

-Linda Gillespie, “It’s Never ‘Just Play’!” Young Children, Volume 71, No. 3: 21st Century Teaching and Learning, July 2016

PreK is voluntary and is available through grant funding in selected schools.  We currently serve approximately 500 students.  Priority is given to young children living within a Title I school district.  If a child is not accepted into the program for the start of school in August, they are placed on a waiting list and/or shared with community partners.

Applications and additional information are available from the Bossier Instructional Center located at 2719 Airline Drive, Bossier City, LA 71111.  Return completed applications to the Bossier Instructional Center.

The Creative Curriculum for Preschool

Developmentally appropriate practice means teaching in ways that match the way children develop and learn so as to promote their optimal development and learning. Early Childhood professionals make decisions about the children on the basis of information about

  • child development and how children learn
  • the individual strengths, needs, and interests of each child
  • the cultures of each child’s family and community

The Creative Curriculum for Preschool is based on five fundamental principles. They guide practice and help us understand the reasons for intentionally setting up and operating preschool programs in particular ways. These are the principles:

  • Positive interactions and relationships with adults provide a critical foundation for successful learning.
  • Social-emotional competence is a significant factor in school success.
  • Constructive, purposeful play supports essential learning.
  • The physical environment affects the type and quality of learning interactions.
  • Teacher-family partnerships promote development and learning.
