Waller School-wide Positive Behavior Intervention Support (PBIS)

What is School-Wide Positive Behavior Intervention Support? Positive Behavior Intervention Support (PBIS) is a new approach to discipline that is mandated across the nation. It takes techniques of positive approaches rather than the old standard of punishments. In PBIS, students can earn incentives for positive behavior & interventions for those negative behaviors that need correction. It uses teachable moments to teach a student how to fix his/her negative behaviors & how to approach situations in a more positive light in the future. Positive behavior is recognized and tracked daily through the PBIS Rewards App.

What are Waller’s school-wide expectations? We use the acronym C.A.T.S. to teach students what is expected of them in all areas of the school. C.A.T.S. stands for Come prepared, Act responsibly, Treat others with respect, & Safety first!

What incentives can my child earn for good behavior? Students can earn grade-level rewards, CAT Cash to redeem for prizes in the C.A.T.S store, positive behavior referrals, referral-free events, and monthly outstanding wildcat free dress.

Students of the Week: Each homeroom teacher will choose a student of the week. Students of the week will earn a hat pass, Free Dress Friday, & Teacher’s choice prize. Pre-K - 3rd grade will attend “Story and Snack” with the principal. 4th and 5th grade students will earn time in the Zearn Extension Center. Parents will be notified when their child has earned SOW.

What Referral-free events? Students who have not received major behavior referral during a nine week period will be eligible to attend the referral-free events. This includes bus referrals.

Waller Elementary strives to provide a positive and safe learning environment for all students. One of the key ways that our school is contributing to this goal is through implementation of a “house system.” The school-wide house system at Waller is composed of four “houses” which provide students with an adult mentor or advisor (average 1:15 ratio of adults to students) who encourages leadership, community, competition, safety and teamwork. Being a family member creates a sense of belonging and identity within the school for students, while also establishing accountability for meeting behavior and academic expectations.
