School Letter Grades

School Letter Grades

Since 1999, the state has issued School Performance Scores for public schools, which are based on student achievement data. To clearly communicate the quality of school performance to families and the public, Louisiana adopted letter grades (A-F). All schools with sufficient data receive school performance scores.

  • Elementary schools (K-6):  75% of the school grade is based on student achievement on annual assessments in English language arts, math, science, and social studies and 25% of the school grade reflects student progress.

  • Middle schools (7-8):  70% of the school grade is based on student achievement on annual assessments, 25% of the school grade reflects student progress and 5% is based on credits earned through the end of students’ 9th-grade year.

  • High schools (9-12): Half of the school grade is based on student achievement (25% ACT performance and 25% state assessment performance along with progress). Half of the school grade is reflective of the graduation index (25% is the strength of diploma which rewards achievements for advanced coursework and International Baccalaureate exam credit and 25% is the cohort graduation rate which is the percentage of students graduating on-time).
