Did you hear the news – or see it? A Greenacres Middle School teacher is the winner of one of the first Calumet Cares STEM grants that will benefit her sixth grade science students.
Marilyn Jones appeared recently on a live morning broadcast on KTAL NBC Channel 6 to accept the award from Calumet. Jones plans to use the STEM funding to purchase hydroponic and aquaponic equipment for her classroom.
“These systems will support our upcoming unit on microhabitats,” Jones explained. “We plan to set up the equipment in advance so that students can observe how the systems function and gain hands-on experience with real-world science applications.”
A company spokesperson said the impetus behind Calumet Cares is to get kids involved in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics), which they say is the future. The long-term goal is to entice students to go on to college, get a STEM degree and work at Calumet once they graduate.
Jones said, “I am grateful for this opportunity and look forward to the positive impact it will have on student learning.”
Congratulations to Marilyn Jones, whose students are ultimately the real winners!
