Airline High School holds a ribbon cutting in front of its student-run store called the Viking Exchange

Lessons in entrepreneurship and business management have evolved from the textbook to a hands-on learning experience at Airline High School following a ribbon cutting that marked the official grand opening of a student-operated school store and retail laboratory on campus.

In partnership with Red River Credit Union (RRCU), the Viking Exchange is now providing students in the Principles of Business class the opportunity to study curriculum aligned with the National Retail Federation.

Student workers are immersed in all aspects of retail operations, from daily management and operations to customer service, merchandising, marketing, sales

and workplace safety, with RRCU providing mentorship and guidance along the way. At the same time, the student body will benefit from services provided at the one-stop shop, including the sale of concessions, school supplies, uniforms and spirit wear.

“This project has been incredible to see come to life,” said Airline High business teacher Brad Winstead, the visionary behind Viking Exchange. “When the concept was first proposed, it seemed logical to centralize the various sales that took place on campus while working to create something that students could genuinely get excited about.”

Winstead explained that Airline previously relied on outside vendors and fundraising to provide opportunities for students to purchase various products, missing the chance to bring business concepts to life for students. That is how RRCU got involved, helping tie it all together.

“It has been a pleasure working with Coach Winstead and to see the development of this truly unique venture that not only teaches students how to operate a business, but also helps support Bossier Parish Schools,” said Brad Bailey, RRCU CEO/President. “We value our partnerships with schools, but being part of a new program with Airline High School and Coach Winstead to teach students real-life work skills is truly exciting.”
